A Day at KP Acoustic Research Labs: Testing USING high-calibre facilities
The results are in and better than expected! 🎉
✨Our best seller, the T5000 Marine Hood , is now certified to a maximum 28.2dB noise reduction. We have some fantastic results for our indoor T700 and T900 , as well as our newest development, the T7000 ! ✨
I had the incredible opportunity to spend a day at the KP Acoustic Research Labs in Southampton, diving deep into the world of acoustic testing. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the level of expertise, knowledge, and facilities at the lab.
I spent the day with Matt testing a variety of our newer products and retesting others within our existing range in their hemi-anechoic chamber, a specially designed environment built to eliminate any external noise or reflections. It's here that the true clarity of sound can be assessed with no interference from the outside world. The chamber's unique geometry ensures that sound waves reflect in specific ways, allowing for extremely accurate measurements of the devices' performance.
Throughout the day, Matt provided valuable support by advising on the best testing methods based on prior measurements from another laboratory, and my feedback about typical hood use. The insertion loss was evaluated in a free-field environment using a Head And Torso Simulator (HATS) placed within the hood at a typical operator location, reflecting performance variations due to the operator's acoustic shading. Measurements captured the maximum potential insertion loss from direct sound energy coming from the sides or rear of the telephone hoods, which were mounted on the floor of the hemi-anechoic chamber. 1/1 Octave band sound pressure level measurements were taken both with and without the hoods, with the HATS remaining in place for the no-hood measurements. The level difference between these measurements is referred to as Insertion Loss (IL) in decibels.
Matt's support was invaluable. He provided in-depth explanations of the testing process, answered all of my questions, and gave insights into how the findings could influence product development. The hands-on approach and the lab's access to cutting-edge technology made this experience unforgettable.
The maximum Insertion Loss (IL) in the 4 kHz 1/1 octave band measured for each product type and noise source location is presented in the table below.

The results are impressive!
The latest test demonstrates a significant improvement in noise reduction of our flagship telephone hood, the T5000 Marine. The product has risen from 23.9dB to a maximum of 28.2dB. This has been achieved by modifying core acoustic materials inside the hood, without affecting the hood's dimensions or structure.
Our existing indoor T700 and T900 Acoustic Fabric Hoods showed outstanding results with 22.3dB and 25.2dB reduction respectively!
The tests of our newest product, T7000 Hood and T7000 Anti-Climb Hood exceeded our expectations, delivering exceptional noise reduction. T7000 achieved 26.4dB insertion loss, 27.1dB for anti-climb variant. We're excited to bring this to market.
The tests showed that all products performed exceptionally. These positive results reinforce our commitment to providing high-performance solutions that enhance the acoustic experience in any indoor environment.
We're proud to supply solutions that offer superior noise reduction and more effective communication.
